There is a typo with the yahoo mail setup.
SMTP: smtp.mobil.mail.yahoo.com
It should be:
SMTP: smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com
Also make sure to enter your actual email address instead of your username.
Thanks Moosa, I fixed the typo.
It also states to enter your entire email address.

I can get it to accept the incoming server, but not the outgoing server using these directions. Are there any alternate SMTP server names or alternate ports?
My problem is that when I get to step 5, I press Next and it tells me invalid user name and password. And I know I’ve input them correctly, as I’ve tried to go through it many times. So I never get to the STMP part.
HHH I was encountering the same problem. After resetting the phone multiple times it finally allowed me to complete the setup process. My email downloaded, however it went down hill after that and starting repeating the invalid user name and password. After several hours of frustration I logged on the Yahoo.com and upgraded to Yahoo email plus for 19.99 for a year, which comes out to 2.00 per Month. I received an email with the pop3 information. I set up my yahoo email on the phone with this information and have not had any problems.
this is my problem exactly; i press next after the first screen and it tells me “Setup could not finish” “Username or password incorrect.” i have tried this a million times. i’m typing it right, it just won’t recognize. not sure what to do.
What is the point of the wifi when you can do the same stuff without it being on.
I have tried this like 1000 times and still get error with name/passwoed
I don’t understand this…
It didn’t work for me, can you give us some more information?
Do you have any other posts relating to this?
We are getting lots of questions regarding setting up Yahoo email on your Droid phone.
I just tried it on mine again (I DO NOT have a Yahoo! Plus account) and it worked fine. I followed the directions on the post exactly.
Make sure that you are selecting Manual Setup in the bottom left corner. Then select IMAP (do not select POP3). Other than that just enter all the information as it shows. Enter your ENTIRE email address for your username.
Please let me know if this works for you.
Awesome post!
I followed the steps exactly, and I get the Username or Password incorrect error everytime.
Any idea when this was posted?
Thanks for the info.
Why isn’t this working for me?!
Thanks!
Make sure that WiFi is off. Also at the very first screen where it has you enter your email address and password you have 2 options:
the bottom right corner is Next – DO NOT select this one
the bottom left corner is Manual Setup – You MUST select this option.
It didn’t work for me, can you give us some more information?
I am having a similar problem today. I set up yahoo imap email a week ago and all worked well (I do have the upgraded version of yahoo mail). Yesterday I kept getting connection error, finally pulled the battery out. Came back working fine. This morning, my yahoo account is GONE. I have tired numerous times to set it up and keep getting the error message when I try to setup incoming mail “Could not finish. User name or password incorrect.” I have turned the phone off and have pulled the battery out, nothing helps. Any suggestions? Thanks!
I have followed the instructions exactly but still no luck! Dos anyone know if there are other settings in yahoo that need to be done first? Maybe some of us have it set one way and others a different way. This is driving me crazy! A quick fix is to open the browser and save a bookmark at m.yahoo.com
Better than nothing but we should all be able to get this working!
I followed instructions for “How to set up Yahoo! IMAP email” and it worked fine on my Moto Droid, except now my sent box is filling with redundant “sends” to the tune of about 1500 messages a day! I may have to disable because of this. Any idea whats going on.
I am having problems with both. I am positive i’m entering everything correctly. Both won’t work past the first step.
For hotmail I get “Unable to open connection to server”
For yahoo I get “Invalid username/password”
help!
Generally I do not post on blogs, – but I would like to say that this post really forced me to do so! really nice post.
I’ve been looking around for articles similar to this but never found one that actually was valuable such as this. Glad I found this place!
Thank You for sharing your knowledge, Really nice post
Now I know why so many people love this site, nice contribution. Thanks
Hi all,
Nice post with a few things I didn’t know. I’m trying to set up yahoo mail and it won’t even let me click on the manual set up button. Why is this happening?
Tony,
You have to enter your email and password before you can click Manual Setup.
Hope this helps!
I have entered in both . I can’t click on manual setup or the next button. Nothing happens when I hit each. My login and password are both displaying in the appropriate boxes.
Yahoo and Gmail are competitors. Just recently Yahoo put a block up, you have to upgrade to the Plus account. Some acounts that were set up previously will remain, but new ones will not to be abled to be setup without the Yahoo Plus upgrade.
I have tried everything. I do have an upgraded yahoo account (did that years ago–no ads is worth $20/year). On the droid, I turned wifi on/off, tired every permutation I could think of. I called Verizon and they walked me through the same steps. Then apologized, then suggested I look at the new Blackberry. They are getting swamped with calls from yahoo users unable to reliabily use the droid for email. I was hoping the OTA on the 11th would fix this but no luck. If anyone gets yahoo setup and it is stable for a few days, please tell us what you did!
My sent box on droid and yahoo mail keeps duplicating, to over a hundred, when I send an email using droid. Don’t know how to stop this from occuring. Starting to become very frustrating having to delete all those emails.
Still same for me can not link yahoo to my droid so frustrating. This is a great site:)
Hi everyone glad to know I am not the only one with this problem, but here is the information I received per Verizon Yahoo has not approved the Motorola Droid for their free accounts and per yahoo because of their cut backs they have noone in the mobile department to speak to any longer for help, and the rep unfortunately had no clue what I was talking about and just kept telling me I need to upgrade and pay for the email and I told her there are many other carriers out there supporting the phone for free email so I refuse to pay them!! I have tried setting it up the way it is explained in this post but I get as far as the incoming server screen then an error that my username or password is incorrect. It never gets to the outgoing server page. So I believe Greg is right some accounts might have been setup but you will no longer be able to and if you can I have heard people with numerous problems such as not being able to send mail, mail being sent multiple times. I think our best bet is to just switch to Gmail and check yahoo through your browser.
Any idea when this was posted?
Thanks for the info!
